ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 23 Optical Disk Cartridges for Information Interchange

Scope: Standardization in the field of removable digital storage media utilizing optical, holographic and magnetic recording technologies, and flash memory technologies for digital information interchange, including:

– algorithms for the lossless compression of data

– volume and file structure

– methods for determining the life expectancy of digital storage media

– methods for error monitoring of digital storage media”.

History:

1985

  • The 1st ISO/TC 97/SC 23 Plenary meeting was held, 1985-05-20/23 in Tokyo.  [Chair: J. Shimada, Secretary; T. Misao]

1986

  • The 2nd TC 97/SC 23 Plenary was held, 1986-09-22/25 in Geneva

1987

  • The 3rd TC 97/SC 23 Plenary was held 1987-10-13/16 in Washington D.C.
  • The 1st JTC 1 Plenary was held 1987.11.17-20 in Tokyo. JTC 1/SC 23 was established. SC 23 had the following four WGs and one ad hoc group:.
    WG 1: Permanent Editing Committee (Convenor: Mr. D Hekimi),
    WG 2: Development of Draft Standards for ODCs (Mr. Mike Deese),
    WG 3: 300 mm WORM ODCs (Convenor: Mr. Lannic),
    WG 4: 130 mm WORM ODCs (Convenor: Dr. Verhoeven)
    Ad hoc group on 356 mm WORM ODCs (Convenor: Mr. Dreessen).

1988

  • The fist plenary meeting of SC 23 was held in Maastricht  Netherlands.

1989

  • The second plenary meeting of SC 23 was held in Tokyo Japan.
  • The title changed from “Optical Digital Data Disk” to “Optical Disk Cartridges for Information Interchange”.

1990

  • The third plenary meeting of SC 23 was held in Washington  USA.
  • WG 5: 356mm WORM ODCS (Convenor: Mr. R. Dreessen) was established.

1991

  • The fourth plenary meeting of SC 23 was held in Sofia Bulgaria.
  • WG 4 was disbanded.
  • Mr. J. van den Beld was appointed as WG 1 Convenor..

1993

  • The fifth plenary meeting of SC 23 was held in Eindhoven, Netherlands.
  • Dr. Yoshinobu Mitsuhashi was endorsed as the new chairman.

1994

  • The sixth plenary meeting of SC 23 was held in Geneva, Switzerland.

1995

  • The seventh plenary meeting of SC 23 was held in Seoul, Republic of Korea .

1996

  • The eighth plenary meeting of SC 23 was held in Berlin, Germany.

1997

  • The ninth plenary meeting of SC 23 was held in Washington DC. USA.
  • Dr. Tomoyuki Toshima was endorsed as the new chairman.

1998

  • WG 3 and WG 5 were disbanded.
  • The scope of SC 23 was modified to “Standardization of Optical Disk Cartridges for Media and Information Interchange between Information Processing Systems including their Volume and File Structure”

1999

  • The tenth plenary meeting of SC 23 was held in Beijing, China.
  • WG 1 and WG 2 were disbanded.

2001

  • The eleventh plenary meeting of SC 23 was held in Lugano, Switzerland.

2004

  • Merger of SC 11 (Magnetic Recording tape & disc).  The title was changed to “Digital Storage Media for Information Interchange”.  The maintenance responsibilities of the SC 11 projects were moved to SC 23.

2005

  • The twelfth SC 23 plenary meeting was held in Kyoto, Japan

2006

  • The title was changed to “Digitally Recorded Media for Information Interchange and Storage” and the scope was modified to:

“Standardization in the field of removable digital storage media (other than hard disks) utilizing optical, holographic and/or magnetic recording technologies for digital information interchange and/or storage, including:

– Algorithms for the lossless compression of data.

– Volume and file structures.

– Methods for determining the life expectancy of digital storage media.”

2007

  • The 13th plenary meeting of SC 23 was held in Montreux, Switzerland.

2008

  • The 14th plenary meeting of SC 23 was held in Jeju, Korea.
  • WG 6: iVDR Cartridge was established. (Convenor: Kei Yamashita)
  • Joint Working Group 1 with ISO/TC 42 was established TC 171/SC 1 was joined later. (Co-convenor: Kei Yamashita and .Peter Adelstein).
  • The scope of SC 23 was modified to add “methods for error monitoring of error monitoring of digital storage media”

2010

  • The 15th SC 23 plenary meeting was held in Winterthur, Switzerland.
  • Mr. Kei Yamashita was endorsed as the new Chairman.

2011

  • Mr. Osamu Kunisaki was appointed as the WG 6 Convenor.

2012

  • The 16th plenary meeting was held in Lisbon, Portugal.
  • The scope was modified to add “flash memory technologies”:
  • Publication of the new edition of ISO/IEC 1001 (File structure and labeling of magnetic tapes)

2013

  • Dr. Peter Adelstein as Co-convenor of JWG 1 was replaced by Mr. Mark Worthington.
  • Publication of ISO 9660/Amd.1 (Volume and file structure of CD-ROM)
  • Publication of ISO/IEC 30190, 30191, 20192, 30193 (BD writable disk).
