ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 34 – Document Description and Processing Languages

Scope: Standardization in the field of document structures, languages and related facilities for the description and processing of compound and hypermedia documents, including:

  • languages for describing document logical structures and their support facilities
  • languages for describing document-like objects in web environments
  • document processing architecture and formatting for logical documents
  • languages for describing interactive documents
  • multilingual font information interchange and related services
  • final-form document architecture and page information interchange
  • hypermedia document structuring language and application resources
  • API’s for document processing

History

Origins   ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 34 has inherited from its predecessors (ISO TC 97/SC 18/WG 8 and ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 18/WG 8) the responsibility for the maintenance of many important standards that have been hugely influential in the development of the World Wide Web. These standards include ISO 8879 (SGML), ISO/IEC 10179 (DSSSL) and ISO/IEC 10744 (HyTime). These standards still inform work on new standards development within ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 34, as well as continuing to influence the work of other bodies such as OASIS and W3C.

1984       ISO TC 97/SC 18/WG 8 formed with ANSI appointed as Secretariat and Dr. James Mason appointed as Convenor, Its first project was to work on the development of ISO 8879 SGML.

1987       With the formation of JTC 1, ISO TC 97/SC 18/WG 8 becomes ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 18/WG 8

1997-09  JTC 1 disbanded SC 18 and decided to operate SC 18/WG 8 as a WG directly reporting to JTC 1 (WG 4).

1998-06  JTC 1/WG 4 was disbanded and a new SC (SC 34) was established with the title of “Document Description and Processing Languages” at the JTC 1 Sendai Plenary.

1998-11  The first meeting of JTC 1/SC 34 was held in Chicago, USA and Working Group 1 (Information Description), Working Group 2 (Information Presentation) and Working Group 3 (Information Association) were established.

1999-01  JTC 1 appointed ANSI as the Secretariat of SC 34 at the JTC 1 Rio de Janeiro plenary.

1999-04  At the Second Plenary Meeting of SC 34, Mr. Charles Goldfarb, Dr. Yushi Komachi, Mr. Steve Pepper were appointed as Convenor of WG 1, 2 and 3 respectively.

1999-11  Dr. James Mason was appointed as the Chairman of SC 34 at the JTC 1 Seoul plenary.

2003-09  The Secretariat was transferred to SCC from ANSI.

2004-11  Mr. Martin Bryan was appointed as WG 1 Convenor.

2006-12           ISO/IEC 26300 (OpenDocument Format) submitted by OASIS via the PAS process was published.

2007-12  The Secretariat was transferred to JISC from SCC. Dr. MURATA Makoto was appointed as WG 1 Convenor. Dr. Patrick DURUSAU was appointed as WG 3 Convenor.

2008-02  SC 34 organized the ballot resolution meeting of DIS 29500 in Geneva, Switzerland.

2008-04  Two ad hoc groups on ISO/IEC 29500 (Ad hoc 1 on Maintenance and Ad hoc 2 on Comment Collection) were created at the SC 34 Oslo plenary.

2008-10  Working Group 4 (Office Open XML) and Working Group 5 (Document Interoperability) were established at the SC 34 Seoul plenary. Dr. MURATA, Makoto was appointed as WG 4 Convenor and JISC appointed Ecma International to provide Secretariat services for Working Group 4. Dr. Jaeho LEE was appointed as WG 5 Convenor.  Dr. Alex BROWN was appointed as WG 1 Convenor.

2008-11  Prof. Sam Oh was appointed as the Chairman of SC 34 at the JTC 1 Nara Plenary.

2008-11  A Resolution of the Nara plenary requested OASIS and the Chairman of SC 34 to prepare a joint agreement on the principles and procedures for maintenance of ISO/IEC 26300.

2009-03  OASIS and the Chairman and officers of SC 34 completed work on the text of a joint agreement on the principles and procedures for maintenance of ISO/IEC 26300. This was subsequently ratified by JTC 1.

2009-03  Ad hoc group 3 on Maintenance of ISO/IEC 26300 was created at the SC 34 Prague plenary, to work out the details of implementing the joint agreement with OASIS on the maintenance of ISO/IEC 26300.

2009-09  Working Group 6 (OpenDocument Format) was established at the SC 34 Seattle plenary, to assume responsibility for SC 34’s work on maintenance of ISO/IEC 26300 under the terms of the joint agreement with OASIS.

2010-03  Mr. Francis CAVE was appointed as WG 6 Convenor.

2010-12  Ad hoc Group 4 on EPUB was created after the SC 34 Tokyo plenary.  Dr. MURATA Makoto and Dr. Yong-Sang CHO were appointed as the Co-Conveners.

2012-03  ISO/IEC 26300/Amd. 1 (ODF 1.1) was published.

2012-08  The third editions of ISO/IEC 29500-1/4 were published.

2013-03  Based on the discussion in Ad hoc 4, the Korean NB submitted DTS 30135, KS X 6070 series via the fast-track procedures.

2013-06  SC 34 requested JTC 1 to approve establishment of Joint Working Group for EPUB with IEC TC 100/TA 10 and ISO/TC 46/SC 4.
